Diolch am y croeso.

I had a look at the localisation file (Cymraeg ffeil lleoli) and didn't notice anything obviously wrong. It looks like you've put a lot of work into it. It would be really useful to have a Village Pump type page on here to ask questions. I would have created one, but wasn't sure what to call it. Maybe Y Caffe, similar to the ones at the French and Spanish Wikipedias. Am I right to assume that the conventions used on the English Wikipedia also apply here? For example, that the title words should be included in bold in the first line?

Mae'n chwith gen i am ysgrifennu yn Saesneg. Angela 19:30 24 Jul 2003 (UTC)

I just had another look at the (ffeil lleoli).

Should things like

/* private */ $wgDefaultUserOptionsEn = array(

be replaced with

/* private */ $wgDefaultUserOptionsCy = array(

The German one uses

/* private */ $wgDefaultUserOptionsDe = array(

If you Ctrl F and search for En, you'll find some more examples. Angela 22:20 24 Jul 2003 (UTC)

I really wish I could speak Welsh properly. I've been trying to learn for the last forty years. Deb

Arwel - see my talk page, where an Esperanto speaker has asked that we put in an article about Esperanto, preferably not derogatory or dismissive. Unfortunately, I don't think I'm up to the job (not just yet, anyhow). Deb 18:18, 15 Feb 2004 (UTC)

PS - One good thing about us being almost the only contributors here - it makes it easier to spot the fandaliaeth! Deb 18:20, 15 Feb 2004 (UTC)
I can imagine that you regard other articles more important in your already not so huge Wikipedia than Esperanto. I'm a language enthusiast and I've already succeded to write short sentences even in such stange languagew as Lakota (an amerindian language) and I worked hard for an artikel about the word for Ring-necked Parakeet (Psittacula krameri) in many languages de:Halsbandsittich in vielen Sprachen, in order to demonstrate how a language can be developped into a standard language, that fits almost all purposes. Icelandic with only about 300 000 speakers did the job well to develop the language into a tool, that works better even on parrots than Hindi or Arabic. I managed to find out the word for Ring-necked Parakeets in 40 languages, write them in their original writing system and translate and analyse, how the word was created. (By the way: Is there a word for this bird in your language and what is it?). So if you could just create an empty page, give it the right title and link it to the Esperanto articles in other languages, I would try to write at least one or two sentences, even if I had to study your language for a rather long time. (I'd see it as a challenge!) You could maybe correct it then. I once even tried to learn Irish (Gaeilge na hÉireann), but found it to be not vigorously enough to learn it as a foreigner. I hope I don't bother you too much with all that stuff. Multkolorbirdo

Glad you commented on the spelling question. I've been experimenting with Tchaikovsky, trying to decide what I prefer. Actually, even in English wikipedia there seems to be some doubt about whether he's Pyotr or Peter. In the end I reasoned that, since the English one has the rule of spelling things "the English way" if it didn't look wrong, I thought we should do likewise, ie. spell things "the Welsh way". By that reasoning, we should call him either "Pyotr" or "Pedr", but not "Peter". Also I think that we should be more concerned with how Welsh speakers will look for him than how many hits we get on Google! Let's keep discussing these questions till we get a consensus. Deb 22:27, 19 Feb 2004 (UTC)

Arwel, can you give me translations of: List of National Leaders; Head of State; Head of Government. I still disagree about the 20th century, though.

Hi Arwel, I was fixing some redirects to say #al-cyfeirio instead of #rdirect as that isn't working and I came across Defnyddiwr:81.5.166.191. Please could this be deleted now as I'm not the only person who uses that IP so it doesn't make a lot of sense for it to redirect to my user page. Thanks. Angela 14:49, 21 Ebr 2004 (UTC)

Hwyl. I can't figure out how to update the "Erthyglau newydd" section on "Hafan" now. But maybe that was the idea... Deb 18:06, 12 Meh 2004 (UTC)

Phew, that took a little searching! You need to edit Template:Erthyglau_newydd -- I think that was one of Marmanel's changes! :) -- Arwel 23:54, 12 Meh 2004 (UTC)

Hi, sorry I know as much Welsh as the nearest doorknob :) Anyway, while looking around for code for a Yahoo search box (for minnan:), I happen to notice the search result page doesn't validate according to W3C's validator. The tags are not XHTML. I think Simple English has some updated code you or someone might want to look at. A-giâu 20:13, 21 Meh 2004 (UTC)

Siwmae Arwel,

Wicipedia/Wikipedia

Bore da, Arwel. Rydw i datblygwyr, oddi wrth en. Just as an FYI, mae'r ffurfweddiad namespace yma "anghywir" - mae'r namespace Wikipedia yn galw "Wikipedia", ond mae'r erthyglau'n galw "Wicipedia:Whatever", ac maen nhw'n mewn namespace 0 (y namespace erthyglau). I can fix this here (the language file has to be updated and then the pages renamed in the database) if you don't have any objections to it - it shouldn't cause anything to break (cross fingers). Translation of the week

Hi! This is Ronline from the Romanian Wikipedia. I would like to inform you that, at Meta-Wiki, there is a project running known as Translation of the week. This project seeks to translate an article into as many languages as possible every week, in order to strengthen collaboration between the different language projects and enable more article depth. The current translation of the week is Oradea, and it has already been translated into 17 languages. You can see more information here. It would be great if you could translate this article into the Welsh language, even partially would be great! Thank you very much, Ronline 11:45, 10 Rhag 2004 (UTC)

One or two questions...

Hi Arwel! I was wondering whether it should say "Oddiwrth Wicipedia, y gwyddionadur rhad" as it does whenever you print something out or edit something (above the edit box). After all it says "Rhydd" below the logo. I was also wondering whether rhad would have the same connotations as cheap, i.e. "of inferior quality". Does it?

And one other thing: What do you think of Urban75? It is by an anonymous user who has been writing quite a lot lately, but to me it looks a bit spammy, and the linked webpage is in English anyways...

--Okapi 04:17, 9 Ion 2005 (UTC)

No, it should be "y gwyddoniadur rhydd" - the point of "the free encyclopedia" is that it's "free as in speech, not as in beer", while "rhad" does have the principal connotation of "cheap"! I've just changed the tagline back.
As for Urban75, I was thinking it was a bit spammish, and doesn't have much apparent connection with Wales, and I don't know who Mike Slocombe is anyway. I wonder if there's a way of expanding it somehow, the en: version is only a little more informative.... -- Arwel 14:20, 9 Ion 2005 (UTC)
Wela i, diolch! I've just had a look at the :en page you linked - it seems to have vanished/been deleted. Ehm... we too, Brute? (I only ask because the IP who wrote the article has been rather productive, lately...). Cheers, --Okapi 05:45, 10 Ion 2005 (UTC)
Ah no, it's a dodgy link -- it really is still there!. -- Arwel 13:55, 10 Ion 2005 (UTC)
Oh, right, I see... And agree to all you said about it. ;-)--Okapi 13:19, 12 Ion 2005 (UTC)

Hi Arwel, sut mae? Would you please have a look at Sgwrs:Hafan, somebody has been pointing out mistakes. I have been correcting the misspelt bits (correctly, I hope), but haven't got a clue about item c). Errr... what to do?

BTW, I have also found another candidate for Wicipedia:Tudalennau amheus...

Hwyl fawr, --Okapi 14:45, 1 Chwe 2005 (UTC)

Hi Arwel.

I was wondering about the copyright infringement in Dewi Sant. I have reverted the page to the last version that hadn't been copied from [1], but if you click through the versions the copyrighted version can (of course) still be found. From a legal point of view, is it enaugh to revert or would the copyrighted version have to be deleted as well? And if it has to be deleted, how do you do that without deleting the whole article? Any ideas? Diolch! --Okapi 05:07, 20 Chwe 2005 (UTC)

Argh! You're right that we should delete the copyvio versions -- unfortunately we have no way to do this ourselves - we'll have to call for developer assistance. That's basically all versions from the 18th Feb., except the oldest, OK? -- Arwel 11:42, 21 Chwe 2005 (UTC)
Diolch! Looks good! Thanks also for telling me how to put those things right. :-) --Okapi 12:41, 21 Chwe 2005 (UTC)

And another question...

Arwel, I hope I'm not getting on your nerves by requesting the impossible all the time - but I couldn't help noticing that the Llythrennau acennog on :en can be introduced into the text by clicking on them. That would be a very nice and useful feature to have on :cy, don't you think? But do you know to do that? *just wondering...* --Okapi 14:36, 21 Chwe 2005 (UTC)

Łǐķë đīś, ŷǒů męąň? -- Arwel 19:39, 21 Chwe 2005 (UTC)
Woops, yes! Campus! Diolch yn fawr! :-) --Okapi 00:11, 23 Chwe 2005 (UTC)

Weblinks, weblinks, weblinks

Hi Arwel! I have just come across Blog and was surprised about the number of weblinks in the text. I think that most Wikipedias collect weblinks at the bottom of a page (and even then there would be quite a lot of them in this article). Do we have any policy about where to put them? And about the number and kind of weblinks?

I was wondering whether to ask this in the Caffi, but people don't seem to drop in there very much lately... --Okapi 04:02, 26 Chwe 2005 (UTC)

Next copyright problem

Would you please have a look at {{Wicipedia:Tudalennau amheus}}? I'm especially wondering about what to do about Prifysgol Cymru and all the pics... Any way to check them?

I've also left a message on the sgwrs of the defnyddiwr who wrote (or copied and pasted?) all these.

Whew...

Fandaliaeth

I know - I only realised after I'd started. I'll leave that aspect of it to you now, and I'll go about trying to improve on articles that you've restored. If something's not blank, it's less likely to attract him, I feel. But I could be wrong. Deb 17:43, 30 Maw 2005 (UTC)

Thinking about it, I'm a bit surprised that the English version of the redirect command actually works here. Is there a way we can stop this? It might deter English-speaking vandals if they have to take the trouble to learn the Welsh version. Deb 18:00, 30 Maw 2005 (UTC)

I had been away a couple of days and just dropped in to witness the effects of last night's havoc - if I can do anything to help the cleanup just let me know! --Okapi 12:16, 31 Maw 2005 (UTC)
I tell you what's irritating. If you block someone - as I just thought I was blocking the vandal - there's nothing to tell you that the person's already been blocked, which he had, by you. I was also wondering whether, having not blocked him for as long as you had, that later blocking would override the previous one. I hope not, because I don't plan to unblock anyone! Deb 20:32, 31 Maw 2005 (UTC)
Sorri!!! That explains how he got back in earlier, then. Diolch. Deb 21:30, 31 Maw 2005 (UTC)
