- A simplified history: Prior to 1992, all Welsh clubs played in the English football league (pyramid) system, today six remain - those clubs in the football league at the time (Wrexham, Swansea & Cardiff), and those that have refused to play in the League of Wales/Welsh Premier (Newport County, Colwyn Bay & Merthyr Tydfil).
