English: There is no traitor in this house A sign in the window of No 2 Fron Haul dating back to the 1900-1903 Penrhyn Quarry Strike, the longest in British Trade Union history. Pressurised by their vicars, Anglican quarrymen progressively broke rank and went back to work. This led to civil disturbances quelled only by the military. It became a practice among the great majority who stood firm to put a sign in the window making it known that 'Nid oes BRADWR yn y ty hwn'. 'There is no TRAITOR in this house'.
When the poster disappeared from a window, it was a clear sign that someone from that house had accepted the 'Punt y Gynffon' - the 'Lacky's Pound'- so called because Lord Penrhyn rewarded each returnee with a golden sovereign. http://www.llechicymru.info/IPSL190003.english.htm http://www.gtj.org.uk/en/item7/9402 |
