The 20th Century goes from 1900-1999. Paul

Err, no. A century runs from 1st January '01 - the xx00 year is the 100th year of the century. There was no year 0, the year after 1 BC was 1 AD. The big fuss at the end of 1999 was because of the big clickover of the most significant digit, and people who didn't think about what it meant thought wrongly that it was the end of the century. Arthur C. Clarke wrote 2001: A Space Oddyssey, not 2000: A Space Oddyssey! If you look at the English version of this article, you'll see that the table shows 1900 in italics indicating that it is "before or after" the 20th century, while 2000 is not in italics.
