riends. Nearly 3,000 were reserved for thatpurpose. Each correspondent was furnished with printed proofs of all thespeeches and even of the prayers. In an adjoining room were fifty typewTriterswith machines ready to transcribe whatever the correspondents might choose todictate, and close by were almost as many telegraph operators to send thecopy to the various newspapers represented. During the few weeks just preceding the opening of the Exposition thedepartment has been perfecting arrangements whereby the accommodations andfacilities forthe newspaper reporters and correspondents should be as complete atthe opening and all through the Exposition as they were at the dedication exer-cises. Three floors in the northwest pavilion of the Administration Buildingconstitute the newspaper headquarters. The preparation of passes and theissuance of them to press representatives who were entitled to receive them hasalso been accomplished by the department, and as may be easily imagined it hasbeen no small task While all this has been carried on the department has been engaged for atime in the preparation of the Official Catalogue. This has been a work stupend-ous beyond the conception of any one uninformed in such matters. The collec-tion of an infinite amount of detailed information from many thousand sourceshas been necessary, as well as its proper classification by departments, groupsand classes. The varied and extensive work which has fallen to the lot of the Departmentof Publicity and Promotion is not all indicated even by what has been alluded toabove.
