English: Phoenix Row The rear of the terrace of houses that was built for Phoenix Pit (part of Etherley Colliery) referred to in Stan's grid square discussion - see link on the left side of this page. Coal was sent from this colliery by the Stockton and Darlington Railway to the major towns of Durham. In 1894, the mine employed 500 men and boys and, as in many of the Durham coal mines, there were some horrific accidents over the years of operation.
