should not have been known, such as the Apotheosis ofSt. Thomas, signed and dated 1631. That of 1616would show, if it were false, a bold effrontery on the partof the author of the forgery, since the picture is not inthe characteristic style of Zurbarán, and at first glanceone could always suspect the handwriting which corre-sponds in sharpness and fluency to the period of PhilipIII. Finally, it is not wholly improbable that Zurbaránshould have painted the work ordered by Sr. Ceperoseven years before the pictures of the Marquis of Mala-gón. The unusual part of it is that there are no records ofthe other works which he undoubtedly executed after thecompletion of this Immaculate Conception and a preciousChild Virgin owned by D. Aureliano de Beruete, andabout the time that he engaged to paint nine new andgrand compositions taken from the life of St. Peter whichthe same Marquis of Malagón had ordered for the highaltar of the Apostle in the Sevillian cathedral, calledfinished in 1625, w
