The Giant Inn, formerly known as The Red Lion, was rebuilt a century ago after a fire in 1898 but the stone fireplace in the bar dates back to the 16th Century. Sign reads: "There are several theories on the Giant's birthdate but no recorded mention until 1694. Cerne Abbas grew around the great Benedictine Abbey founded here in 987AD. In the centuries after the Dissolution of the Monastries in 1539, the village became famous for its beer, at one time boasting 14 public houses for a population of just 1500 people!" (There are now only 3 pubs). |
