Roman Dog brooch, front
Disgrifiad
English: Copper alloy Roman zoomorphic brooch in the form of a seated greyhound. The overall form of the brooch is reminiscent of a Romano-British Dragonesque booch. The brooch is in good condition and remains intact apart from the pin on the reverse. The brooch is finely cast and the surface has been tinned to give a silver finish. The tinning covers the whole front surface and extends onto the rim of the hollow cast back. The form of the dog is well-observed and slightly stylised with an enlarged single eye on the head and a curved body resting on muscular haunches. The legs are long and slender and the animal has a hollowed waist. It terminates at the top in an elongated snout and downward pointing ear - the head of the dog is cast in side profile. At the base of the brooch, the dog sits on a small triangular field which represents the ground that the dog is sat on. On the reverse, the brooch has the means for a pin attachment. At the neck there is a protruding sub-rectangular catch plate with a curved notch in which the pin would be hooked to securely attach the brooch through fabric. At the base of the brooch, set on the back of the triangle that represents the ground, there is a single pierced pin lug with the remains of an iron pin. The brooch weighs 15.8g and measures 45.4mm in length, 22.5mm in width and 16mm in thickness.
