English: St Nicholas, Haxey The church has remnants of Norman masonry, solid masses which once formed the base of the original tower and there is evidence of a steep Norman roof above the chancel arch. The arch was formed in the 12th century and in the 14th century further development work changed the church from a Norman structure to the Perpendicular style church of today. During this period the Lady Chapel and the Chantry were added. The tower was removed, the nave lengthened and the supporting piers of the tower were opened up into arches. A new tower 90 feet high was added in the 15th century, which meant heightening the walls and clerestory added to let in more light. A Rood Screen and Loft once stood and the opening to it is still there.
The pulpit is 19th century and is built of Caen stone. The oak altar was carved by the Reverend John Johnson, the vicar from 1861 to 1887. He died 17th August 1887 aged 82. There is a commemorative brass to him, his wife and their grandchild who died aged one year and it says that they are interred in a vault beneath the chancel.
In 1903 the church was reseated, two Norman columns rebuilt and the rest repaired. In 1912 the walls of the nave and all the arches were stripped of plaster and restoration work was carried out on the clerestory.
