English: Llywelyn ap Gruffydd Fychan No likeness exists of this great Welsh patriot and martyr who was put to death by Henry IV, slowly and publicly, for refusing to betray Owain Glyndwr in his attempt to wrest Wales back from English domination at the beginning of the C15. The local blacksmithing brothers Toby and Gideon Petersen of St. Clears won a competition to memorialize the man with this 16ft stainless steel sculpture which stands on a 17 tonne stone brought from the hills to the north of the town to a site beside the castle in 2001, the 600th anniversary of his death. The hollow image underlies the prophecy that the warrior may return in Wales' future hour of need. |
