DisgrifiadCapel Egryn - the scene of strange apparitions - geograph.org.uk - 529241.jpg
English: Capel Egryn - the scene of strange apparitions Capel Egryn, built in 1836, was the focus of strange manifestations and visions during the Religious Revival of 1904-05. These were centred around a 38 year old farmer's wife, Mary Elizabeth Jones, of Islaw'r Ffordd, who became better known as Mari'r Golau (Mary the Lights). In addition to seeing strange lights in the night sky she also had visions of Christ, of angels and, in the form of a large black dog, of Satan himself. The visions attracted attention well beyond the area and thousands flocked to Capel Egryn. Mari also went on a nationwide tour prophesying and describing her visions to packed congregations. Many claimed to have shared her visions. Reporters from the Daily Mirror, the Daily Mail and the Daily Telegraph wrote of seeing mysterious lights. Others standing next to them, including their own photographers saw nothing. In later years Mari who was regarded as an embarrassment by the respectable people of Barmouth, became something of a recluse and is said to have turned her back on religion. Country folk however did not forget her and when she died in 1936 she had one of the biggest funerals seen in North Wales. The following link has a photo of Mari
In recent years the Egryn Lights have intrigued UFO-ologists and scientists alike. One theory is that they were associated with the Bala earthquake of 1905.
