English: 'WARNING - WORKERS EXPLODING!!' A 19thC sign on the approaches to the Penrhyn Slate Quarry. Unusually for the time, the Welsh version is uppermost. This is because Welsh was the first language, and the only language, of most of the local population. What they made of the sign we can only guess. It appears to have been translated, with the aid of a dictionary, by a monoglot English manager and reads 'Warning - Workers Exploding' |
