Diolch am y croeso.

I had a look at the localisation file (Cymraeg ffeil lleoli) and didn't notice anything obviously wrong. It looks like you've put a lot of work into it. It would be really useful to have a Village Pump type page on here to ask questions. I would have created one, but wasn't sure what to call it. Maybe Y Caffe, similar to the ones at the French and Spanish Wikipedias. Am I right to assume that the conventions used on the English Wikipedia also apply here? For example, that the title words should be included in bold in the first line?

Mae'n chwith gen i am ysgrifennu yn Saesneg. Angela 19:30 24 Jul 2003 (UTC)

I just had another look at the (ffeil lleoli).

Should things like

/* private */ $wgDefaultUserOptionsEn = array(

be replaced with

/* private */ $wgDefaultUserOptionsCy = array(

The German one uses

/* private */ $wgDefaultUserOptionsDe = array(

If you Ctrl F and search for En, you'll find some more examples. Angela 22:20 24 Jul 2003 (UTC)

PS - One good thing about us being almost the only contributors here - it makes it easier to spot the fandaliaeth! Deb 18:20, 15 Feb 2004 (UTC)
I can imagine that you regard other articles more important in your already not so huge Wikipedia than Esperanto. I'm a language enthusiast and I've already succeded to write short sentences even in such stange languagew as Lakota (an amerindian language) and I worked hard for an artikel about the word for Ring-necked Parakeet (Psittacula krameri) in many languages de:Halsbandsittich in vielen Sprachen, in order to demonstrate how a language can be developped into a standard language, that fits almost all purposes. Icelandic with only about 300 000 speakers did the job well to develop the language into a tool, that works better even on parrots than Hindi or Arabic. I managed to find out the word for Ring-necked Parakeets in 40 languages, write them in their original writing system and translate and analyse, how the word was created. (By the way: Is there a word for this bird in your language and what is it?). So if you could just create an empty page, give it the right title and link it to the Esperanto articles in other languages, I would try to write at least one or two sentences, even if I had to study your language for a rather long time. (I'd see it as a challenge!) You could maybe correct it then. I once even tried to learn Irish (Gaeilge na hÉireann), but found it to be not vigorously enough to learn it as a foreigner. I hope I don't bother you too much with all that stuff. Multkolorbirdo

Glad you commented on the spelling question. I've been experimenting with Tchaikovsky, trying to decide what I prefer. Actually, even in English wikipedia there seems to be some doubt about whether he's Pyotr or Peter. In the end I reasoned that, since the English one has the rule of spelling things "the English way" if it didn't look wrong, I thought we should do likewise, ie. spell things "the Welsh way". By that reasoning, we should call him either "Pyotr" or "Pedr", but not "Peter". Also I think that we should be more concerned with how Welsh speakers will look for him than how many hits we get on Google! Let's keep discussing these questions till we get a consensus. Translation of the week

Hi! This is Ronline from the Romanian Wikipedia. I would like to inform you that, at Meta-Wiki, there is a project running known as Translation of the week. This project seeks to translate an article into as many languages as possible every week, in order to strengthen collaboration between the different language projects and enable more article depth. The current translation of the week is Oradea, and it has already been translated into 17 languages. You can see more information here. It would be great if you could translate this article into the Welsh language, even partially would be great! Thank you very much, Ronline 11:45, 10 Rhag 2004 (UTC)

One or two questions...

Hi Arwel! I was wondering whether it should say "Oddiwrth Wicipedia, y gwyddionadur rhad" as it does whenever you print something out or edit something (above the edit box). After all it says "Rhydd" below the logo. I was also wondering whether rhad would have the same connotations as cheap, i.e. "of inferior quality". Does it?

And one other thing: What do you think of Urban75? It is by an anonymous user who has been writing quite a lot lately, but to me it looks a bit spammy, and the linked webpage is in English anyways...

--Okapi 04:17, 9 Ion 2005 (UTC)

No, it should be "y gwyddoniadur rhydd" - the point of "the free encyclopedia" is that it's "free as in speech, not as in beer", while "rhad" does have the principal connotation of "cheap"! I've just changed the tagline back.
As for Urban75, I was thinking it was a bit spammish, and doesn't have much apparent connection with Wales, and I don't know who Mike Slocombe is anyway. I wonder if there's a way of expanding it somehow, the en: version is only a little more informative.... -- Arwel 14:20, 9 Ion 2005 (UTC)
Wela i, diolch! I've just had a look at the :en page you linked - it seems to have vanished/been deleted. Ehm... we too, Brute? (I only ask because the IP who wrote the article has been rather productive, lately...). Cheers, --Okapi 05:45, 10 Ion 2005 (UTC)

Hwyl fawr, --Okapi 14:45, 1 Chwe 2005 (UTC)

Hi Arwel.

I was wondering about the copyright infringement in Dewi Sant. I have reverted the page to the last version that hadn't been copied from [1], but if you click through the versions the copyrighted version can (of course) still be found. From a legal point of view, is it enaugh to revert or would the copyrighted version have to be deleted as well? And if it has to be deleted, how do you do that without deleting the whole article? Any ideas? Diolch! --Okapi 05:07, 20 Chwe 2005 (UTC)

Argh! You're right that we should delete the copyvio versions -- unfortunately we have no way to do this ourselves - we'll have to call for developer assistance. That's basically all versions from the 18th Feb., except the oldest, OK? -- Arwel 11:42, 21 Chwe 2005 (UTC)
Diolch! Looks good! Thanks also for telling me how to put those things right. :-) --Okapi 12:41, 21 Chwe 2005 (UTC)

And another question...

Arwel, I hope I'm not getting on your nerves by requesting the impossible all the time - but I couldn't help noticing that the Llythrennau acennog on :en can be introduced into the text by clicking on them. That would be a very nice and useful feature to have on :cy, don't you think? But do you know to do that? *just wondering...* --Okapi 14:36, 21 Chwe 2005 (UTC)

Weblinks, weblinks, weblinks

Hi Arwel! I have just come across Blog and was surprised about the number of weblinks in the text. I think that most Wikipedias collect weblinks at the bottom of a page (and even then there would be quite a lot of them in this article). Do we have any policy about where to put them? And about the number and kind of weblinks?

I was wondering whether to ask this in the Caffi, but people don't seem to drop in there very much lately... --Okapi 04:02, 26 Chwe 2005 (UTC)

I know - I only realised after I'd started. I'll leave that aspect of it to you now, and I'll go about trying to improve on articles that you've restored. If something's not blank, it's less likely to attract him, I feel. But I could be wrong. Deb 17:43, 30 Maw 2005 (UTC)

Thinking about it, I'm a bit surprised that the English version of the redirect command actually works here. Is there a way we can stop this? It might deter English-speaking vandals if they have to take the trouble to learn the Welsh version. Deb 18:00, 30 Maw 2005 (UTC)

I had been away a couple of days and just dropped in to witness the effects of last night's havoc - if I can do anything to help the cleanup just let me know! --Okapi 12:16, 31 Maw 2005 (UTC)
I tell you what's irritating. If you block someone - as I just thought I was blocking the vandal - there's nothing to tell you that the person's already been blocked, which he had, by you. I was also wondering whether, having not blocked him for as long as you had, that later blocking would override the previous one. I hope not, because I don't plan to unblock anyone! Alexandra o Rwsia

As this weirdo is following me around the English wikipedia, I thought I'd come over here to talk to you. I can quite accept you not wanting to enter into the dispute. My main concern is to have the page back at a title that conforms to naming standards, not the made-up one that this guy invented just because he didn't like the old one. Clearly she can't be "Alexandra Feodorovna of Hesse", because the two halves are mutually exclusive. Just thought I'd explain without having to be followed by a tirade of illiterate abuse. Hyn a'r llall

Arwel, thanks for your reply yn Y Caffi to my tale of woe concerning Version 1.5 (it still b*****s up Opera, but I'm learning to love Firefox instead). You invited me to request Administrator status: I am honoured, but I think that my low-level command of Welsh probably rules me out at present: I am still very much a dysgwr, so while I'm very prepared to help with "housekeeping" tasks, I wouldn't be qualified to engage at any length in discussions in Welsh, as might be required by the role. What do you think?

It's not strictly necessary to conduct lengthy discussions in Welsh, as most of the Administrator functions are, well, "administrative" - the "rolio nôl" button is very handy for dealing with vandals! In all fairness I don't think any of the current administrators can be viewed as 100% fluent any more (if they ever were)... I personally have spent most of my time over the border for the last 30 years :( Anyway, if you change your mind, just ask.

May I ask you though, as an Administrator, to do one litttle task for me? And that is, to "speedily delete" the page Template Misoedd. It serves no useful purpose, and was created accidentally be me on my way to creating Nodyn:Misoedd.

Done!

By the way, although, as I said, my Welsh from many years ago is now so heavily rusted as to have practically seized up -- so I am more-or-less starting all over again -- I do think there is a role for learners in the various diferent language Wikipedias (so long, of course, as we do not muck things up for mother-tongue users). I don't know whether you agree. I do know for my part that a few months of contributing to the Irish-language Vicipéid, for instance, have done more to revive such skills as I may ever have had in that language than years and years of off-and-on revision! -- Jac-y-do 11:21, 23 Gorffennaf 2005 (UTC)[ateb]

I know the feeling - I've got three dictionaries to hand for when I get stuck!

Rhybudd

There's a warning on the English wikipedia that "Willy on Wheels" is back. We've had him here before, so let's try and look out for him! Deb 19:15, 2 Awst 2005 (UTC)[ateb]

Yes, I've noticed some of his incarnations appearing in the English Wikipedia's block log! Just to let you know, after tonight I'll be offline until next Monday night/Tuesday, since I'll be at the World Science Fiction Convention in Glasgow (and I'll be having an early night tonight - I've got to catch an 0623 train tomorrow!). -- Arwel 10:18, 3 Awst 2005 (UTC)[ateb]
"Willy on Wheels" is a pain-in-the-neck vandal - he usually replaces articles with pictures of a "wind-up willy on wheels" which he claims is a "sex toy" (!), but latterly he's taken to moving and renaming pages which makes things a bugger to straighten out - if I remember rightly, DG, you arrived here just after we were clearing up after his last visitation to cy. He usually creates accounts which contain the words "...on wheels" (with or without trailing exclamation marks). He's a free-fire zone, any administrator on cy can ban him on sight and revert any edits he's done. -- Arwel 10:18, 3 Awst 2005 (UTC)[ateb]

Hebrew

Just out of interest, I asked the only Hebrew-speaking user I could find (Horzer) what that stuff meant on that user page that was recently created and then blanked. Here's his response: "Ok, the thing in Hebrew is a discussion of Malcolm X and "Black Supremacy" theories (or something like that), comparing X to Martin Luther King. Its probably copied from Wikipedia Hebrew or from other source. I don't think this user knows hebrew, out of some words." Deb 17:41, 4 Awst 2005 (UTC)[ateb]

You can write an HTML comment in the middle: diweddar.

Or you can write it without a comment in the middle: ar. But to do that you have to have The Force. And anyone who doesn't have The Force will mess it up when they next edit this page......

Last time we had this problem, it was that MAG_END in LanguageCy.php ("__END__" yn yr iaith fain) was defined as "DIWEDD", not "__DIWEDD__". But I see that's been changed by now, so why are we still getting the problem? Maybe the new version's not been properly installed? I think we should file a bug report. Does anyone else want to, or shall I? Marnanel 22:57, 9 Awst 2005 (UTC)[ateb]

A Welsh version of Wikinews?

Now here's a good suggestion, why not have a Welsh version of WikiNews. Like we have Wiktionary which is a very good idea, why not have a Welsh version of Wikinews? It's only a suggestion by the way.

Wictionary

Hi Arwel. I've been editing Wictionary very much recently, trying to set a basic structure for the whole thing. Since you're the moderator I presume you have overall control of how it works, so I have a few requests (I don't want to seem expectant):

  • make it so that the prefixes 'Wiciadur:' and 'Atodiad:' aren't counted as dictionary entires (in the case of Nodyn:, and Wicipedia: on Wicipedia)
  • fully translate the navigation bar and change 'Community portal' to 'Portal cymunedol' (like on Wicipedia)

If you can do these things please do, and in return I'll contribute heavily to Wictionary (could it be possibly be renamed Wiciadur? - just a thought).

Huge regards - please reply, Adam7davies 17:13, 26 Hydref 2005 (UTC)[ateb]

Thanks a lot for you help! I've just renamed the whole thing Wiciadur - do you know how I can contact the person with the most power over the site?

Administrator for Wiciadur

Hi Arwel, I was wondering if you could tell me how you became an administrator for Wiciadur? Since there's no administrator-nomination page I'm not sure how to go about applying.

Wikizine

Hi, I am w:nl:gebruiker:Walter of the dutch Wikipedia. I am writing you because your are listed as ambassador of your wiki. I have something to say that I think you will find useful and possibly others of your wiki also.

You know it is not easy for the members of a local wiki to be informed about what is going on in the higher levels of the Wikimedia family. This because of the language problem and the high level of fragmentation of places where you can find information.

I am now making a weekly news letter (Wikizine) that attempts to provide the news of the Wikimedia projects. The concept is to list only a very short description of the news an give the relevant url to the subject. I want it to be short, only give the news that is important for all projects. The target audience include the ambassadors. It is for people who are interested in what it going on outside there own wiki. I emphasize on the news that is practical-technical. The information comes form several "news"-pages on several wikis, the mailinglists and IRC. There will be news I can not discover. If you have news found somewhere or from you own wiki please let my know. wikizine AT wikipedia.be

I can only create one version in something that supposed to be English. I count on the readers to inform there local wiki about the news in there own language.

Wikizine is send by use of the mailinglist Announce-l. It is only used for this. So people can subscribe without being swamped by emails like the lists.

I hope that you and others of your wiki will subscribe to Wikizine and give feedback. So that Wikizine can become really a source where Wikimedians can find out what is going on. Greetings, w:nl:gebruiker:Walter PS: do not repond here. I will not see it.

Greetings Arwel Parry! I sincerely apologize to you for the auto-machine translated article on 23 October and I will never do that again. Please forgive me.
