Hi Deb, when I was adding someting to the Esperanto-Wikipedia about "Kimra lingvo" (Cymraeg), I found a request to translate the english page about Cymraeg into Esperanto. I will do so, even english is not my mothertongue, but german. We esperantists try our best to help endangered and minority languages. Especially we are fighting against any English-only tendencies and for language equality. Would you please translate something about Esperanto into Cymraeg. Unfortunately our Esperanto-language is often ridiculed or even defamed by english-only speakers and thus the english page is not very positive in regard to Esperanto. The french side is a bit more positive. The german version is more positive and e.g. the dutch version is quite positive. A short-notice warning if you're currently online, or probably an after-the-event explanation of what's gone on if you're not! :) I've asked the developers to put http://meta.wikipedia.org/wiki/LanguageCy.php online -- this should finish the Cymricisation (dates, etc.). The most prominent change will be to the namespaces, so Wikipedia: should become Wicipedia:, User: becomes Defnyddwr:, User_talk: becomes Sgwrs_defnyddwr: and so on. I'm hoping that these changes will be automatic, but I can envisage that there may be outstanding links which may be broken and have to fixed manually :( ! Touch wood it all goes well.... Draig Goch20 here, just saying thanks for the Welcome. I am a learner myself (Been learning Welsh since 1996). I construct my Welsh sentences to the best of my ability in Microsoft Word. When I read over it then and feel that my sentence is as good as I can make it, I then paste it into Wikipedia Cymraeg for public view. I am new to the Wikipedia atmosphere and ask if people give me time to learn to use it's functions. I also thank people for correcting some of my Articles.

Hope to meet nice people on Wikipedia too, A Welsh Wikipedia is a very good idea.

It's the bad penny again!

I just saw you've created a link to 'Pedr Ilyich Tchaikovsky', and was wondering if we ought to be translating P.I.'s first name liked that, since this articles' spelling is unique in all of Google! There are 60 entries for 'Petr Ilyich' and just under 20,000 for 'Pyotr Ilyich'. I don't know if anyone would think of looking under Pedr, but if we did that, shouldn't his name be spelt something like 'Pedr Ilïts Tsaicofsgi'? I'm not too keen on developing a whole new transliteration scheme for Russian -- I was on holiday in Vienna during the 1990 Russian coup and it was quite odd reading newspapers featuring people like Boris Jelzin and Michail Gorbatschow! (I suppose in Welsh they'd be spelt Boris Ieltsin and Mihangel Gorbatsof!) -- Arwel 21:03, 19 Feb 2004 (UTC)

Glad you've been thinking about naming! I think most people would probably look under 'Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky', but some might look under 'Pedr Ilyich Tchaikovsky', so I'd suggest having the article under "Pyotr" with a redirect from "Pedr". -- Arwel 00:04, 20 Feb 2004 (UTC)

Banning vandals

Hi Deb. That user's been doing anonymous edits to the sandbox, putting "Welsh people - sheepshaggers" twice. I don't see that we have to put up with that sort of thing, so I banned him for a week... unfortunately it looks like he's a dial-up user who gets a different IP address every time he logs in, so we'll just have to play "whack-a-mole" and ban him every time he shows up! If it was a matter of a regular user playing silly buggers then we ought to discuss things before banning him, but in the case of anons doing this then I regard it as vandalism which can be fixed without warning. I had an email from Dyfrig yesterday asking how to fix his mistake, so I wrote him an email explaining what to do, on the principle that if you give a man a fish he'll have a good meal, but teach him how to fish and he'll eat for life, rather than fix it myself. Editing Erthyglau Newydd

It took a little searching, but you need to edit Template:Erthyglau_newydd -- I think that was one of Marnanel's changes! :) -- Arwel 23:56, 12 Meh 2004 (UTC)

That's right. I thought it made sense that anyone could add articles to Erthyglau_newydd since anyone can create them. There didn't seem to be the same risk of vandalism as the one which necessitated the protection of Hafan, since casual vandals would need to be able to find the page first. Year articles

If you'd rather the year articles were structured a different way, please don't fix it by hand! It would be very easy just to modify the script and run it again. Hi Deb. The deleted "Waldo Williams" article had 3 "l"s in it (well, 4 if you count the one in "Waldo"!), and there was a request from the creator to delete it. Yes, having to check the log whether someone's already blocked is a pain. Hi Deb, sut mae? Thought this section had an appropriate heading for the subject I want to mention, i.e. the supposed "contributions" of Defnyddiwr:Mh69. Wicked sense of humour - take a look at the second pic he's just added to Anne Boleyn for instance, or Guinness. His / her User pages give further examples in the same genre. I think he's just into NONSENSE and messing things up "for a laugh". I could easily revert the Boleyn joke now but then it might be missed and I really feel this User is a strong candidate for blocking (wonder what else he's done?). We had a really bad spate of vandalism late last night. Three 'new users' - probably the same person - had a blitzkrieg session for about half an hour. Please don't ban me by mistake; one account created was "Anatiiomaros", in retaliation for my intervention! All the damage was reverted by me eventually, as anon user. What I'd like to know is whether there is a means of getting some sys-op or admin to come over quickly and block a persistent vandal? Hi Deb, thanks for the suggestion about being an admin. I wouldn't mind at all but I'd rather only do it occasionally or when need arises (e.g. last night!) as I feel we have so few contributors that I'm more useful writing articles. However if someone should nominate me I would accept and be there on "stand-by", so to speak. These vandals are becoming more sophisticated I think - knew how to revert my reverts within seconds last night, for instance - and slapping a tudalen amheus on a page has no effect whatsover. Losing faith in editing skills

I feel now that I am losing faith in my editing skills on this wikipedia. I have received complaints that my articles are alway's in need of "Language Cleanup" which proves that I am not as good as the other users on here. Made me feel a little better, diolch. I'm young and I guess being a youngster I take to things. I love Welsh, I wish Welsh was used more often everywhere in Wales. My problem was that for years I did not feel confident that my Welsh was any good to use in public. This wikipedia made me feel a lot better until now. User using German swear words

The following user "80.229.160.150" left "scheiss! nicht langsam sondern schnell" which means "shit! not slowly but fast". This use of language no matter what language it is in, it is unacceptable.

In the article on the German language, I had meant to say "yn gyflym" but had written "yn araf" instead by mistake. Annoyed with myself for my stupidity, I came out with an expletive in the edit summary when I corrected it. Sorry, I shouldn't have done, and apologies for any offence.

The edit summary really meant:

Oh darn. I didn't mean to say "yn araf" but "yn gyflym".

But quoted out of context, it looks like I meant to say:

Defecate! And don't do it slowly, do it fast!

Cyflwyno fy hunan

I'm Rhys. I live near Nice, France but I was born in Wrexham and our family moved to Cardiff when I was young. I have also lived in Bala and Machynlleth. I speak fluent Welsh and French, not to mention English of course. I also speak quite good Italian and a little Arabic too. I could see that the Welsh pages of Wikipedia were rather sparse and decided to contribute, or at least try to move them along a little. One little thing;- I'd like to see "bocs swnd" replaced with "bocs tywod" or better still "blwch tywod". I know that the word "swnd" is used in certain regions but in Standard Welsh the word for "sand" is "tywod".

Deb, The State Union of Serbia and Montenegro has ceased to exist, but this Welsh Language encyclopedia has not recognised this news. Croeso, just happened to spot it. By the way I found it impossible to log in yesterday - the server insisted that I'd disabled cookies but that was not the case. Tried everything - changed browsers IE/Firefox , lowest safety rating for cookies in both etc. - then I found that the server had actually given me cookies after all! No need for apologies. I don't know how the changes to messages are done - Gareth Wyn did a few for me based on my suggestions on the message talk page. On each talk page I say that I am suggesting an amendment or translation. Then I give my suggestion. On the 'removedwatch' message that is followed by my own comment about it being consistent with another message concerning the watch lists. On the 'mypreferences' message there is some discussion after my signature on the original post agreeing with the suggestion. Please ignore Viewprevnext - this is work in progress. I hope I have identified the correct messages in my suggestions and that I am not messing the system up elsewhere with these suggestions, but am fairly confident that I am getting the hang of this exercise. Have gone ahead and translated postings on the hafan sgwrs page which are outstanding, most of which are straightforward amendments to wording. Hafan will eventually need to be redesigned but you will see that the current suggestions are designed to improve the appearance of hafan with relatively little effort (getting rid of red links, etc.) I am also trying to make sure that the pages linked to hafan are of good quality so as not to put off potential readers withing five minutes of landing at Wicipedia! I am aware that you have a lot of admin stuff to do on Wicipedia already - if this extra load is too much please could you let me know so that I know to pester elsewhere? Hello Deb. Thanks for creating a llenyddiaeth Ladin category. About "The British Martial" (see Sgwrs:Martial): that's the only form of his literary pseudonym that's normally used, presumably because it was printed as such in editions of Owen's epigrams.

Have you seen the page Y Fogonydd (beirdd)? I came across it yesterday. Somebody's taking the mick! It's a character from The Hitchiker's Guide to the Universe and most definitely does not belong to the catgeory Beirdd! It's very tongue in cheek and needs cutting sharply or deleting, in my opinion. Thank you for your message regarding starting a page equivalent to Wikipedia:Naming conventions. I am quite happy to start such a page but as there are several ways of translating 'conventions' (principally arferion and safonau) I feel that the question of the page title needs to be put to the community for discussion, either by yourself or myself. The page on 'arddull' is the page I have been consulting up till now to discover what conventions there are on Wicipedia. In fact I was not aware that there was a convention on naming monarchs on Wicipedia until I looked in the Caffi archives the other day. This makes me wonder whether there are any other conventions which have not yet been written up in the Wicipedia:Arddull page which are perhaps buried in the archives of Y Caffi? Double category

Hi Deb, sut mae? I've just noticed there are two categories that cover more or less the same ground, "Categori:Mynyddoedd Cymru" and "Categori:Mynyddoedd a bryniau Cymru". The latter is the larger. Would it be possible to merge them? I suppose keeping the latter is the best option as it is often difficult to decide whether a height is a bryn or a mynydd! Gosodiadau diofyn

Currently, the Welsh wikipedia's default settings mean that all intrawiki (mewnwici) links are underlined without having to roll the mouse over them. It's different from all the other wikipedias, and it looks a little ugly. It can be changed by going to "fy newisiadau" (there's a detailed explanation about it in Y Caffi), but as a bureaucrat, I was wondering if there was a way for you to change the default settings of the site so that it looks more professional for everyone. Cerdd

I have noticed that there is a sub-heading 'cerdd' in the pages on individual years which I think was created by you. Unfortunately the main meaning of 'cerdd' on its own is 'poem'. It means music in combinations such as ystafell gerdd (music room), offeryn cerdd (musical instrument) but using 'cerdd' on its own to mean music appears affected or old-fashioned (isn't language a convoluted tool!). I bring this to your attention as I think from looking at the page histories that you created these sub-headings, when Wicipedia was in its infancy. I wanted to check with you whether these were created using a bot? If so, is it possible to create a bot to change 'cerdd' to 'cerddoriaeth'? (I don't know anything about bots myself, beyond that they save work!) Or were they created using a note? I dread the thought of ploughing through all the years to change them manually. yn Gymraeg

I have undone your change in mutation on Hafan because although you would expect words beginning in C to mutate after 'yn' unfortunately Cymraeg is an exception! I seem to remember reading somewhere that the 'logic' (inasmuch as any language has a logic!) for this is that there is a silent 'y' in the middle - yn y Gymraeg. This silent 'y' causes treiglad meddal. However in a phrase such as yng Nghymraeg y Gogledd there is no silent 'y' and therefore the treiglad is trwynol. I've just noticed a serious problem with the SieBot's edits. When it adds "be-x-old:(xxx)" (Old Byelorussian?) it shows up on the page itself, even though it's neatly in place in the list of interwikis. See for example Dydd Iau. A quick look at the bot's contributions suggests there may be hundreds of these to clean up, somehow or other. Could you ask Arwel or somebody who knows about the technical side of things to check this, please? Is it just SieBot or have there been problems previously, for instance? Either way it looks very untidy and spoils the article's appearance. Finding and removing them all would be quite a task, and rather pointless if it's just going to be repeated by SieBot or some other bot. Anatiomaros 18:32, 11 Mai 2007 (UTC)

Yes, I saw that too when I updated the interwiki section for my bot earlier today. It looks to me as if an entry in the interwiki table for the database of this wiki (and possibly others) is missing. As you can see on for example in the interwiki section of my user page on Dutch Wikipedia, the problem does also occur there. Please do not remove the interwikis, but create an issue with high priority at http://bugzilla.wikimedia.org and ask for it to be fixed. I'll try and get developer attention on IRC. Have you been keeping an eye on "Edmwnd Harri Puw", tagged as hoax and proposed for deletion? Just got here from cy. to check it out. My long list of reasons for deletion as a hoax on the Discussion page had been reverted by one of two new sock puppets used by this hoaxer (he now has four or possibly five user names plus does anon edits - not bad in a week!). He also added a very general list of references (along the lines of Who's Who in Wales etc) as "proof", none of them actually giving a page number etc for the supposed Mr Puw. He then removed the hoax and deletion tags, which I've just replaced. This is most definitely a hoax (see Discussion page and Welsh wikipedians talk). I was aware of that from the outset but spent some time searching out possible references to back my case. I wonder if you could do something about it, and the user (= User:EdPuw, User:Hebog and his two new ones, plus I think User:Emyr411)? I had Sky news on for the first time in days and the breaking news of the attack came, then the announcement of her death about 20 mins later. I came across her around 2000, when I was doing research on the Welsh language in Herefordshire for my B.A. at Lampeter. One thing I noticed was that the article says she was possibly related to Sir Thomas Parry, but I’ve read that there was no connection between them!

(I reverted the image and the original now appears on Hafan, but for some reason I can't delete the photoshopped version. He's done all sorts of practical jokes in the past, but over the last few days he's been all over the place, so to speak (see the reverted edit of Penisarcwm for instance and the blanking and restoring of the Caffi). I've tried to be patient. Would you like to do the block, or shall we give one last try? Could you leave him a message perhaps? Vandal user account

Hi. I apologise for communicating with you in English, but I do not know Welsh. A long while ago, a user created an account on cy.wikipedia using the nickname I tend to use on Wikimedia projects (User:OldakQuill, please see en:User:OldakQuill or commons:User:OldakQuill). The user used the account to vandalise cy.wikipedia and was promptly banned. I am having a problem unifying my account across Wikimedia because this account uses the username "OldakQuill", but was not set up by me. In this scenario, meta:Help:Unified_login suggests contacting a bureaucrat on the project to request the vandal account be moved to another user name. I am not sure what cy.wikipedia policy says concerning this. Would you be willing to move the vandal-account to another name so that I may take this username?
