Rule, Britannia!

Oddi ar Wicipedia

Cân genedlaethol Brydeinig wladgarol yw "Rule, Britannia!", gyda geiriau'r gerdd "Rule, Britannia" gan James Thomson a cherddoriaeth gan Thomas Arne.

Cyfansoddwyd y dôn yn wreiddiol yn 1740 fel rhan o Fasque gan Arne wedi'i seilio ar fywyd y Brenin Alfred. Datblygodd poblogrwydd y gan yn syth, a daeth yn gyffredin i chware'r gan yn annibynnol o'r Masque gwreiddiol. Daeth yn hynod berthnasol mewn cysylltiad a thwf yr Ymerodraeth Brydeinig a meistrolaeth Brydeinig dros y môr.

Yn draddodiadol, perfformir y gan gan unawdydd fel rhan o fedli o alawon Prydeinig yn ystod Noson ola'r Proms. Yn ddiweddar mae'r arfer yma wedi newid i raddau yn dilyn cyfnod Leonard Slatkin fel arweinnydd Cerddorfa Symffoni y BBC, gyda'r don nawr yn cael ei pherfformio heb unawdydd. Un unawdydd enwog i berfformio'r gan yw Bryn Terfel yn ystod tymor 1994. Roedd ei berfformiad yn nodedig am gynnwys fersiwn Gymraeg o'r pennill cyntaf, yn lle'r trydydd pennill Saesneg.

Y ferswin o'r llyfr 'The Works of James Thomson' gan James Thomson, argraffwyd 1763, Cyfrol II, t.191

1

When Britain first, at Heaven's command
Arose from out the azure main;
This was the charter of the land,
And guardian angels sung this strain:
"Rule, Britannia! rule the waves:
"Britons never will be slaves."

2

The nations, not so blest as thee,
Must, in their turns, to tyrants fall;
While thou shalt flourish great and free,
The dread and envy of them all.
"Rule, Britannia! rule the waves:
"Britons never will be slaves."

3

Still more majestic shalt thou rise,
More dreadful, from each foreign stroke;
As the loud blast that tears the skies,
Serves but to root thy native oak.
"Rule, Britannia! rule the waves:
"Britons never will be slaves."

4

Thee haughty tyrants ne'er shall tame:
All their attempts to bend thee down,
Will but arouse thy generous flame;
But work their woe, and thy renown.
"Rule, Britannia! rule the waves:
"Britons never will be slaves."

5

To thee belongs the rural reign;
Thy cities shall with commerce shine:
All thine shall be the subject main,
And every shore it circles thine.
"Rule, Britannia! rule the waves:
"Britons never will be slaves."

6

The Muses, still with freedom found,
Shall to thy happy coast repair;
Blest Isle! With matchless beauty crown'd,
And manly hearts to guard the fair.
"Rule, Britannia! rule the waves:
"Britons never will be slaves."

Y cyfieithiad Cymraeg a ganwyd gan Bryn Terfel

A Phrydain gododd ar alwad nef
A chodi fu o'r tonnau câs
Hwn oedd y siarter, y siarter drwy'r holl wlad,
A hon yw cân yr engyl glan.
